Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the substantive meaning of experience of labor and delivery of women after Lamaze education.

Method: This study was done interpretative phenomenological qualitative method developed by Van Manen. The participants were women who had Lamaze education. The study was done using a structured question, searching idioms and original meaning of terms, collection of descriptions in arts and art literatures, description of expressed experience of women in labor and delivery, identification of themes, and description of the meaning of the experiences of participants.

Result: The emerged meaning were comfort due to preparation for parent, helping and sharing by husband, unbearable suffering from pain such as to almost to die, difficulty in using breathing ethod, fantasy with birth of life, gratitudes towards mother, and regrets for not coping better.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that Lamaze education should be done to help women focus on better respiration training including self efficacy for coping with labor and delivery. It is suggested that a comparison study with women who did not have Lamaze education should also be done.
